Single-photon absorptiometry (SPA) was first described by Cameron and Sorenson (1963) in an effort to overcome the problems inherent in the use of film densitometry. The basic configuration for the single-photon systems commercially available today was introduced in 1972 (Mazess and Cameron, 1972). This device was designed to give a digital readout of bone mineral content and bone width. Several manufacturers now market the single photon absorptiometry system (Novo, Gammatec, Nuclear Data, Norland, Lunar).
