Degenerative Conditions of the Vitreous Body

Abstract

Asteroid hyalosis is characterized by the presence of white spherical particles embedded in the vitreous body. About 27% of patients with asteroid hyalosis are diabetic, yet only 5.4% of diabetic patients have asteroid hyalosis. Therefore, the findings of asteroid hyalosis should alert the examiner to the possibility of diabetes in the patient. Asteroid hyalosis is unilateral in 75% of cases. There is no special sexual or racial predilection. Asteroid hyalosis is usually asymptomatic even in cases where the particles are so numerous that it is difficult to see the retina with indirect ophthalmoscopy. Yet many of the patients do not report decreased visual acuity! The reasons for this discrepancy are not clear.
