It is often thought that very little was known about the stars in the nineteenth century because most astronomy books of the time tended to concentrate on the planets. This was far from the truth, however, although nineteenth century knowledge of the stars was purely observational, with no understanding of their internal processes. In fact, at the time astronomers found themselves somewhat frustrated by what they often perceived as scant reward for their considerable efforts.
