Abstract

At the beginning of the third millennium the studies on the epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) led to the conclusion that we are facing a very serious public health threat, that of a pandemic of cardiovascular disease. In this context, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and its components [i.e., intermittent claudication (IC), critical limb ischemia (CLI), and acute limb ischemia (ALI)] should also be treated as a prevalent global disease [1]
