Historical developments in the field of gamma-ray bursts are briefly reviewed. Both observational and theoretical progresses are discussed. Steps toward measuring the distances of γ-ray bursts, toward building the standard fireball internal-external shock model, are discussed in some detail. Some post-standard effects and their implications to the central engines of gamma-ray bursts are addressed. Finally, some selected topics and recent achievements are also discussed.
