
Petrarch was an eloquent witness of an excitement widely shared in his day: the excitement of geographical discovery. His Senilia are enlivened with recommendations of the pleasures of imaginary travels, seated in one’s chair, with maps and books. He even boasted that he could ‘lead his readers through all lands with a pen’.1 He was reflecting a prevalent taste. Yet he could report only selective progress.
