One of the most devastating complications of respiratory disease is the limitation it imposes on the individual’s capacity to engage in physical activity. As disease progresses in severity, the capacity to exercise progressively decreases. In very severe disease, the subject becomes dyspneic on minimal exertion, or even at rest. In this chapter, the normal respiratory responses to exercise will first be reviewed. This will be followed by a description of how different disorders affect these responses.
