The Asimotrypes carbonate-hosted mesothermal gold deposit, located at Eastern Macedonia, north Greece, geologically belongs to the West Rhodope massif, which represents the metamorphic core complex of an alpine collision orogen. The ore is of replacement and shear zone-controlled types. Sulfide mineralization is relatively simple and consists of arsenopyrite, pyrite and gold. SIMS studies have shown that gold occurs both as free milling and as submicroscopic particles in arsenopyrite and less in arsenian pyrite. Conditions of gold precipitation and deposition are briefly discussed.
