In this presentation, the mobile satellite service (MSS) is regarded as complementary to the corresponding terrestrial systems. The MSS may offer an outdoor service extension to the terrestrial mobile systems. This can be achieved with appropriate integration of the satellites with the terrestrial system. This chapter considers the integration of mobile satellites into the GSM system. On one hand, the services available and being planned for GSM place many demanding requirements in the satellite systems aiming to integrate with GSM. On the other hand, GSM provides a good core network platform for integration as it is a modular system supporting full-fledged international mobility.
