The paper is devoted to the decompositions of a quantum state as a weighted sum of one-dimensional projectors. It gives a complete characterization of all the decompositions of a given state, and describes explicitly the set of irreducible decompositions. Finally, a class of decomposition is particularized that have relevance both from the physical and mathematical point of view.
