Abstract

Apollo Danubebridge in Bratislava. This technically interesting and creatively outstanding bridge structure, which was marked with the European Steel Construction Prize 2005 from the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, is the fifth Danube crossing in Bratislava, Slovakia. The impressive structure surely emphasizes the claim of the bridge as a new landmark of the city Bratislava. The main bridge with a total length of 514.50 m, consisting of two approaches and a central arch with a span of 231.00 m, was constructed as orthotropic steel structure. Beside the high complexity of the design and the peculiarities with the fabrication, this article mainly describes the unique erection method of floating the bridge into its end position over a rotatory pillar which has not been done in Europe to this magnitude before.
