Some optical properties of tantalum borate (tabo4), a compound with unusual coordinations

Abstract

Tantalum borate (TaBO4) has the zircon structure with unusual coordination for the cations: Ta5+ in eight- and B3+ in four-coordination. The infrared and Raman spectrum is reported and discussed. The symmetrical and asymmetrical BO5−4 valence stretching lies at much lower energy than usually observed in borates. A comparison with other compounds with zirconstructure is made. TaBO4 shows a bluish-white luminescence under ultraviolet excitation at temperatures below liquid N2 temperature. The emission consists of at least two subbands. A comparison with YTaO4 is made.
