AbstractThe photolysis of acifluorfen, sodium 5‐[2‐chloro‐4‐(trifluoromethyl)‐phenoxy]‐2‐nitrobenzoate (I) in aqueous solution afforded only 2‐chloro‐1‐(4‐nitrophenoxy)‐4‐trifluoromethylbenzene (II) arising from photodecarboxylation. The reaction followed first‐order kinetics, though the photo‐reaction rate was solvent‐dependent. A mechanism that accounts for the formation of the product is proposed.
