Abstract Alloxan has been found to undergo chelation with Co + + , Ni ++ , and Cu ++ ions in aqueous solution, giving products having a 1:1 ratio of metal to alloxan. The isolated chelates were found to elicit an increase in blood sugar in rabbits comparable to that from alloxan itself, but over a much longer period of time.Metal chelates of two derivatives of alloxan, riboflavin, and its dichloro analog, gave greater increases in blood sugar, which suggests that alloxan may exert its diabetogenic effect as a metal chelate.
