Recent theory and developments relating to the formation and modification of synthetic polymeric films are discussed in relation to the pharmaceutical uses of such films in dosage form development. Fundamental mechanical and physicochemical properties of films as affected by plasticization, solvent effects, polymer chemistry, film additives, and other factors are considered in relation to film dissolution, permeability, and diffusion properties.
