The authors revisit the defuzzification problem and they propose a few inquiries into the nature of defuzzification. The authors first give a brief survey of the main defuzzification schemes that have been proposed during the last few years. They still find that COG (center of gravity) and MOM (mean of maxima) remain standard defuzzification operators for most of the fuzzy sets that have been designed either in industry or in academia. The authors also propose a novel defuzzification method that is based on the uncertainty concept. It is a simple mechanism that uses the background information that is present in the universe of discourse, which provides a relative comparison with respect to the knowledge sources (fuzzy sets) that constitute it. Definitely, it makes sense to do a relative evaluation of the fuzzy set that is to be defuzzified.

| selected citations These citations are derived from selected sources. This is an alternative to the "Influence" indicator, which also reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | 122 | |
| popularity This indicator reflects the "current" impact/attention (the "hype") of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 10% | |
| influence This indicator reflects the overall/total impact of an article in the research community at large, based on the underlying citation network (diachronically). | Top 1% | |
| impulse This indicator reflects the initial momentum of an article directly after its publication, based on the underlying citation network. | Top 10% |
