AbstractExperiments involving six soil types indicated that the production of miniature ice lenses is dependent on soil moisture content and grain size with lenses being produced in finer‐grained soils at lower moisture contents than is possible in coarser soils. Explanation of the results involves consideration of the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of the unfrozen soil through which water migrated to the freezing plane to allow ice lens growth.
