Child maltreatment at any stage can result in psychiatric and medical disorders; a literature review summarizes the research, including a focus on recent studies showing an increase in prevalence of child maltreatment, and an associated increased risk for suicidal ideation, suicide attempts in individual with mood disorders, and an increased risk for first mood episode and episode recurrence.
