Within a decade the prevalence of neurodegenerative conditions such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease among the elderly in industrialized nations is predicted to increase dramatically. This special issue of Biotechnology Journal has been edited by Nektarios Tavernarakis from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Crete, Greece, and features papers and reviews about e.g. a nanobiotech biosensor for catecholamine, huntingtin antibodies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and much more.
