AbstractA new technique has been developed allowing the determination of the relative amounts of charged and neutral soot in fuel‐rich premixed low‐pressure flames. Results on C2H2 and C6H6 flames are reported and used, together with charged particle number densities, to calculate soot mass fractions and particle sizes. The occurrence of charged soot particles is discussed within the adopted mechanism of soot formation.
