AbstractThis paper discusses in a semi‐qualitative way mathematical models for fixed bed chemical reactors in which a single chemical reaction takes place. Various models are discussed with some mention of the difficulties of computation, stability, and the anatomy and pathology of systems in which chemical reaction is coupled with heat and mass transport. Both continuous and discrete models are discussed for a single phase flowing through a matrix of catalyst particles.
