AbstractNoah‐LSM, applied in GRAPES model, cannot express the changes of runoff‐yield area effectively and describe hydrological cycle completely. It is improved as follows: (1) Add saturation excess runoff generation module, which considers the change in runoff‐yielding area based on a storage capacity curve for the better grid runoff simulation; (2) introduce routing module based on Muskingum method, to consider the redistribution of soil moisture in two‐dimensional level. The improved model application results indicated that the meteorological elements in the surface layer simulated are influenced by land surface water cycle process, such as soil moisture, 2 m temperature, is closer to the observed.
