AbstractThe sulfated mucopolysaccharides heparin and chondroitin sulfate are immunologically inactive toward highly purified rheumatoid factors or any other components of the serum of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. Positive latex fixation tests of selected serum samples using heparin in place of human gamma globulin are due to the simultaneous presence of endogenous gamma globulin. Nearly similar results may he obtained with latex tests using no coating agent whatever. Addition of heparin to latex suspensions imparts stability to the colloidal dispersion and remedies prozone phenomena encountered in such titrations.
