AbstractCatharanthus roseus cells were grown in the presence of arsenite, arsenate, methylarsonate and dimethylarsinate. Cell growth and arsenical uptake were monitored. Reduction of arsenate, methylation of arsenic and demethylation of methylarsenic species are described. Alkaloid production by the cells is dramatically influenced by the presence of arsenicals. 1H NMR studies of methylarsonate uptake by whole cells of C. roseus are reported.
