Apoptosis is a physiological process of cell suicide that is implemented by activation of latent proteases that demolish vital cellular constituents. Apoptosis is used to sculpt the body during development, to maintain constant cell number by balancing cell production by mitosis, and to remove cells that are damaged or infected. Failure of cells to undergo apoptosis can lead to cancer and autoimmune disease, and inappropriate apoptosis may contribute to or cause organ damage in degenerative disease and ischemic vascular injury. Keywords: Apoptosis; Bcl-2; Caspase; Death Receptor; IAP; p53; Programmed Cell Death
