The authors consider the reflection of a plane wave incident upon a perfect mirror covered by a dielectric diffraction grating. Scattering matrices are developed, account being taken of evanescent fields and fields growing away from the interface. A variety of types of grating are considered, and the paper closes with some numerical results.
