Obstetrics and Gynecology

Abstract

The seventh edition of Willson, Carrington, and Ledger'sObstetrics and Gynecologymaintains its excellence, particularly in general obstetrics. Comments on ultrasound have been inserted, and hopefully in the 8th edition will be appropriately placed before roentgenographic studies. The section on gynecology is brief but accurate. The section on aging is written with sensitivity. There is a useful chapter on the breast. Chapter 4, "Psychology and Life Periods of Women," is a distillate of unsubstantiated psychiatric views and useless outmoded male chauvinistic attitudes, which, it is hoped, Dr Willson will redo with Dr Carrington for future editions. The comment made on page 410 when discussing elderly primigravidas, "a greater percentage of women of this age have an abnormal labor on an emotional basis, either because psychologic problems prevented their marrying earlier or because a long period of infertility had a psychogenic basis," is also an inaccurate judgment of American society today.
