Evaluation of a General Anesthetic

Abstract

Isoflurane is a nonflammable halogenated ether used as an inhalational anesthetic. It has physical, pharmacologic, and clinical properties similar to those of halothane and enflurane; however, it differs in important respects from both. It is a more potent muscle relaxant than halothane and does not have the CNS irritant properties of enflurane. It does not sensitize the myocardium to epinephrine as does halothane, and it undergoes less biotransformation than either enflurane or halothane. ( JAMA 1981;245:2335-2336)
