To produce a "concise, yet informative, comprehensive survey" of skeletal disease—the author's avowed objective—indeed presents a formidable venture. To correlate pathology with clinical manifestations, roentgenograms, and treatment greatly increases the magnitude of the task. Years of intense interest and study qualify the author to undertake such an assignment. The extent and quality of discussion on systematized (by which the author means regionalized or generalized) developmental disorders and histiocytosis proclaim careful observation of these maladies. In discussions of metabolic and endocrine disorders, recent biochemical and experimental data illuminate traditional and at times cursory pathology concepts. The more frequent degenerative and traumatic diseases receive less attention. The section on infection regrettably lacks clarity on the role of surgery in treatment. Several "common and unusual" conditions discussed in only one or two hasty sentences might better have been omitted.
