Intravenous Injection of Crude Marihuana

Abstract

To the Editor.— Four cases of an acute illness following the intravenous injection of crude marihuana have been reported. 1-3 Recently we had the opportunity to study three additional cases sufficiently different from those previously reported to warrant this presentation. An attempt was made to determine whether the thrombocytopenia seen with this illness is due to platelet consumption from intravascular coagulation as suggested by Henderson and Pugsley. 1 All cases were in young healthy white male drug users who used the same marihuana on the same occasion. A few months prior to this illness, one patient had injected marihuana intravenously without collapsing. In these papatients the hypotension was responsive to therapy and consequently little renal insufficiency followed. Glucosuria was noted in two patients who were not treated with intravenously administered dextrose solutions. Hepatomegaly was found in one case but there was no elevation of the total bilirubin level. Blood cultures
