Current concepts of the pathogenesis of intestinal atresia of the newborn cast considerable doubt on the classical theory of failure of recanalization. Clinical and experimental evidence make it probable that atresias are the consequence of intrauterine abdominal catastrophes occurring late in fetal life. This concept is illustrated by a case report, and the technical advantages of early operations and the use of a reservoir attachment to a decompressing ileostomv are discussed.
