History. —N. B., a white man, aged 24, was admitted to the hospital, May 24, 1918, complaining of stiffness in his jaws, but still able to talk. He was a shoemaker, but for the past three months had been working as watchman at one of the railroad stations. The family history was negative. The patient had the usual diseases of childhood, had had gonorrhea twice, and a chancre about a year before. Recently he had been in perfectly good condition until about 3 o'clock on the morning of admission, when he awoke with stiffness of the neck, and had difficulty in opening his mouth. He said: "I have been in such good health that I expected to get married in a week." He did not recall any previous accident. There was no history of any cut or puncture for the past three months.
