Diverticulum of the urinary bladder, according to the literature on this subject, is a condition which has not received clinical recognition until comparatively recent years. Up to 1906, only five cases had been reported in the United States.1Since then, however, the number of cases has increased in proportion to the means available for the recognition of such a condition. Although the etiology of diverticula is still in dispute, during the last ten years much attention has been devoted to their treatment, and several operative procedures yielding satisfactory results have been devised. STRUCTURE AND LOCATION The designation diverticula of the urinary bladder is applied to pouches which develop on the wall of the bladder. These may be large or small, single or multiple. They may involve the musculature of the bladder wall or merely the mucosa. Englisch makes a distinction between "true" and "false" diverticula, agreeing with Rathbun that
