This volume constitutes the second edition of a book which has already earned the authors a firm reputation as an authoritative treatise in the area of drug addiction. Although it is inevitable that in such a specialized field much of the material replicates basic content of other publications in this area, the exposition is clear, well organized, and conservative in nature. In the first chapter ("The Nature of Drug Addiction"), an historical purview of drug addiction is presented. Data are included on the current distribution of all forms of addiction in the United States by race and geographic location. Phenomena related to the addictive process are discussed, and the standard methods of self-administration of drugs by addicts are reviewed in some detail. Chapters 2 through 4 presents a classification of addicting drugs with a description of their physical and addictive properties. Included are: "Opiates and Their Synthetic Equivalents," "Addicting Nonopiate
