Abstract

The author of this textbook is a well-known authority in the field of head and neck radiation oncology. His book reflects years of hard work and captures his unique experience, especially in the management of squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract. The views he expresses throughout the 23 chapters are unorthodox. His philosophies of treatment are based on personal experience, accompanied by facts he retrieves from the literature. The first chapters deal with general concepts of radiation therapy and some technical observations. The staging system for head and neck cancer is presented, as well as a synoptic discussion of the biologic basis for combined treatment. Although the author highlights the importance of a team effort between different specialists, the joint effort he describes does not seem to function well as the reader can judge by noting subtleties in the text.
