EFFECTS OF -CHYMOTRYPSIN

Abstract

To the Editor: I read with considerable interest Dr. Michael Hogan's remarks concerning possible deleterious effects of α-chymotrypsin. It might have been more to the point had Dr. Hogan edited the commercial query to read, "Alpha si ? o Alpha no ?". However, since Dr. Joaquin Barraquer is equally fluent in French I am sure that only deGaulle would be upset. I agree with Dr. Hogan that it is time for a scientific reevaluation of the long-term effect of α-chymotrypsin. We should cease to condemn zonulolysis out of hand as a cause of complications which may be only coincidental. Certainly, enough evidence of directly related problems has been accumulated to warrant a full-scale investigation. In assessing our results, however, we must not lose sight of the fact that α-chymotrypsin has contributed more to cataract surgery than the lysis of the zonule. It has served to stimulate interest and enthusiasm in the cataract
