SYPHILIS OF THE SCLERA

Abstract

The present case is of interest because of the rarity of the condition, the treatment used and the results obtained. REPORT OF CASE Miss X, aged 15, was first seen on Sept. 11, 1930, for a refractive error (hyperopic astigmatism), which was easily corrected. She had been receiving antisyphilitic treatment for congenital syphilis over a period of years, under the direction of Prof. A. Austregesilo. She stated that she tolerated neither a bismuth preparation, administered in the form of bismuth sodium tartrate, nor the arsenicals. On Dec. 14, 1932, she was seen again with a complaint of visual disturbances, redness and ciliary pain in the right eye of one week's duration. There was an exudate in the anterior chamber, with circumcorneal injection and ciliary tenderness. A diagnosis of iritis was made, and atropine prescribed.
