Inflammation Mediators and the Inflammatory Reaction

Abstract

A technique is described whereby the keratin layer of the skin is removed by stripping and the inflamed porous site is pretreated with inflammatory and antiinflammatory agents. Fluorescein and sodium anazolene (Coomassie Blue) are used as indicators of capillary permeability. By means of this technique the effects of inflammatory and antiinflammatory agents and the dynamics of inflammation of human skin is explored. Some of the effects of histamine, compound 48/80, nicotinic acid-furfuryl ointment, serotonin, and bradykinin on stripped skin and on capillary permeability are described, and their role as inflammatory agents is discussed. The action of antihistamine, antiserotonin, and hydrocortisone on inflamed skin and on some of the probable mediators of inflammation is also explored.
