A total of 175 acne lesions, including comedones, papules, pustules, and cysts were examined bacteriologically by smear and culture. The bacteriology of acne is simple. Two organisms, Corynebacterium acnes and Staphylococcus albus , usually in combination, occupy the various types of acne lesions almost exclusively. Both are regarded as contributors to pathogenesis by secondary infection.
