The author considers the story of the French philosopher D. Diderot and Empress Catherine II’s relationship as viewed upon through the prism of state utopianism of the Enlightenment era. The author concludes that even in the era of philosophers it was impossible to establish a comprehensive dialogue between a philosopher and a ruler, utopia and politics, which is proven by the analysis of writings and epistolary legacy of either side of the dialogue in question.
