The Assessment of Authenticity Based on the Nara-Grid

Abstract

The goal of adaptive reuse as a conservation strategy is to pass on to future generations the tangible and intangible qualities of cultural assets. The conversion and restoration of existing buildings for new uses is a complex process that requires taking into account a number of factors, such as structural analysis, identifying the values that made the building eligible for designation as a cultural property, defining new functions, and developing design strategies. Choosing the appropriate function and approach based on the building’s evaluation is crucial to the process’s success. In addition to their physical worth, the preservation of these buildings’ authenticity is becoming more and more important. However, a common view of what authenticity means in regard to conservation and how it can be expressed has yet to be established. The Nara Grid, based on the Nara Document of Authenticity, is a tool designed to fill this gap. In this study, this method was examined in the context of the Teutonia Building adaptive reuse project.
