Political Theology of the “Russkiy Mir”: Theoretical Origins and Academic Institutionalization

Abstract

This article analyzes the origins of the concept of the “Russkiy mir” through the theoretical developments of the Slavophiles. The trend of “Slavophilism”, in its core theses, has never disappeared from Russia’s historiosophical discourse, but has merely been adapted to the current political context. Due to significant socio-cultural transformations, this “theology of conciliarity” has evolved over two centuries from a retroutopia into a tool of geopolitical strategy.The core ideas of Slavophilism —namely, the exclusive nature of the Russian form of Orthodoxy and the collectivist lifestyle of the Russian people, preserved in archaic rural communities —were sanctified and developed by Slavophile philosophers I. Kireevsky and O. Khomyakov within the pseudo-philosophical doctrine of “conciliarity”. The “distinctive” Russian philosophy that the Slavophiles attempted to construct —despite broader scientific developments —could not remain a mere theory but demanded practical application. Therefore, they sought to “churchify” philosophy, claiming that holistic knowledge arises not from logical reasoning, but from intuitive faith. Within the framework of “conciliarity”, the ideology of Russian messianism was formulated—positioning Russian statehood as having a unique and dominant role in transmitting the principles of the “Russkiy mir” on a global scale.The Slavophile theme experiences a distinctive revival in academic discourse during the Second Cultural Congress in 2008, under the guise of the “Russkiy mir” ideology. Within the same ideological stream, the Russian Orthodox Church asserted the Gnostic exclusivity for Russian Orthodoxy, in direct contradiction to the doctrine of Christian universalism as articulated by Paul the Apostle. Today, the pseudo-historical constructs of Putin’s neo-imperial vision are being realized through large-scale expansionist aggression against Ukraine.The author emphasizes the importance of continuing humanitarian research on Russian studies by Ukrainian scholars—particularly to counter the further spread of Russian mythological narratives that have served as ideological justification of Russia’s military aggression.

У статті проаналізовано витоки концепції «руского міра» з теоретичних розробок слов’янофілів. Слов’янофільство у своїх основних тезах ніколи не зникало з історіософського дискурсу Росії, лише адаптувалося під актуальний політичний контекст.Через відповідні соціокультурні трансформації «богослов’я соборності» подолало шлях у два століття від ретроутопії до геополітичної технології. Своєрідної реінкарнації та актуалізації слов’янофільська проблематика набула в процесі академічної рефлексії на ІІ Культурологічному конгресі 2008 р. під машкарою ідеології «руского міра». У цьому ж мейнстримі РПЦ декларувала гностичну ексклюзивність російського православ’я всупереч вченню християнського універсалізму, викладеному ще апостолом Павлом у Новому Заповіті.Нині псевдоісторичні конструкти путінської неоімперії реалізовано у формі широкомасштабної експансії проти України.У статті наголошено на важливості гуманітарних досліджень з російської проблематики саме українськими науковцями, зокрема, щоб завадити подальшому поширенню російських міфологічних наративів, які призвели до ідеологічного обґрунтування військової агресії РФ проти України та актів геноциду стосовно українського народу (Рафал Лемкін).
