Abstract

The article describes the role of dialectal texts as representatives of the linguistic and cultural life of the dialects of different regions of the Ukrainian dialect continuum. It is a reliable source of preserving communicative dialect features, and a space for the investigation the dialectal phenomena. On the material of the published dialectal texts from the Seredniopolisky dialects of Zhytomyr region in the publication «Unity in Diversity. Polishchuks» (prepared for publication by V. Moysienko and H. Hrymashevych) the dialectal phonetic features of this area have been analyzed through the prism of the linguistic worldview and the Polischuks’ culture of the 20th century, which are engraved in coherent speech as the representative of the linguistic picture of the world by the representatives of dialects. The diversity of the texts and their thematic content have made it possible to trace the state of preservation of Seredniopolisky dialectal features in the domain of phonetics in the speech of representatives of the elder generation (informants from 1911 to 1939). First of all, the preservation of dialectal, mostly archaic features in the system of vocalism, less often – consonantism (the functioning of vowels [ô], [ê] of different articulation in new closed structures instead of etymological vowels [o] and [e]; the presence of [ê] instead of the old ѣ being mainly in the open and [e] mainly in the closed structures; the presence of [иі], [і] and [іи]; significant softening of the consonants before [e] in the northern parts of Zhytomyr region, mainly those bordering on the territory of Belarus; functioning [e] instead of [ę]; dispalatalization [r], [t] in the infinitive form and [c] in the postfix of the verbs; [ts] – mostly at the end of the words and [p]; lack of the sound [f], etc.).These dialectal phonetic features have been recorded sequentially in different parts of the language and their word forms. The explored texts demonstrate the proper state of preservation of archaic phonetic peculiarities of the Seredniopolisky dialects in the second half of the 20th century – the beginning of the 21st century in the speech of informants of the elderly.
