Non-formal media education of teachers in Ukraine: experience and prospects

Non-formal media education of teachers in Ukraine: experience and prospects

Abstract

This paper focuses on the development of media education for teachers within the context of non-formal education. It is argued that the preparation of educators for media-related educational activities is diverse in terms of content, formats, tools, and pedagogical methods. The paper summarizes valuable practices of non-formal media education for teachers in Ukraine since the country gained independence. These practices reflect the commitment of educational institution managers and civil society organisations to enhancing teachers’ professionalism, mastering innovative resources, and improving their teaching proficiency, as well as methodological, project-based, and other competencies necessary for the effective delivery of subject-specific disciplines in general secondary education. The author examines courses, training programmes, and digital platforms as key forms through which teachers acquire knowledge and practical skills in media literacy. Based on the analysis of relevant training programmes, the study highlights the need for further promotion and dissemination of pedagogical experience in the field of media education.
