Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of chronic intermittent hypoxic training (IHT) on some indices of lipid metabolism in the relatively remote period (17 days) after a single X-ray irradiation (X-irr.) at a sublethal dose. Methods: Male adult (7-8 months) and old (23-24 months) rats of Wistar population were used. Animals were divided into 4 groups: I – control; II – animals taken into experiment since 17 days after single X-irr. exposure at dose of 5 Gy (dose rate 0.00129 C/kg per/min), exposition time - 10 min); III – animals were exposed to IHT for 2 weeks (breathing of air mixture containing 12 % of O2 for two hours daily, 5 days per week); IV – IHT + X-irr. exposure (animals were irradiated one day after exposure to IHT). Body-weight, high density lipoproteins and cholesterol (CH) levels in plasma and CH level in the liver tissue were determined. Results: 17 days later after termination of the 2-week IHT body weight loss of adult and old rats by 13% and 14%, respectively. Was observed 17 days later after exposure to X-irr. It has been identified weight gain of adult rats in comparison with control by 12%. In the old irradiated animals significant changes in body weight in comparison with control ones were not found. Blood plasma CH level of irradiated adult rats was not significantly changed as compared with control group. The old irradiated rats revealed a significant increase of blood plasma CH level as compared with control by 17%. 17 days later after exposure to X-irr. CH level in the liver tissue of adult and old rats increased in comparison with control by 39% and 15%, respectively, which is a manifestation of lipid metabolism disorders and feature of the metabolic syndrome. Chronic IHT for 2 weeks before the single X-irr. exposure produced 17 days later after exposure a positive effect on lipid metabolism of irradiated animals of both age groups: in adult animals it prevented the increase in body weight and helped to reduce the CH level in the liver tissue; in old ones it prevented the increase of CH level in the blood and liver tissue. Conclusion: Chronic IHT of adult and old rats during 2 weeks prior to a single X-irr. exposure at a sublethal dose can prevent 17 days later after irradiation manifestations of some radioinduced effects.
