Research into industrial radio interference in technological radio communication channels on electrified railways

Research into industrial radio interference in technological radio communication channels on electrified railways

Abstract

Electrification of railway transport is one of the most important measures to increase the economic performance of transportation and improve the main operational indicators of railways. But electrified sections are a source of high-intensity radio interference, which disrupts the operation of mobile and stationary radio equipment. The paper presents the results of experimental studies of the statistical characteristics of radio interference on direct and alternating current sections in the frequency bands of the meter range of 160 MHz, allocated for railway transport in Ukraine. The distribution of amplitudes of quasi-peak values of the radio interference field strength is approximated by a logarithmic normal law. On direct current sections, the interference levels differ insignificantly with vertical and horizontal polarizations. On alternating current sections with horizontal polarization, a maximum of the radio interference field strength is observed with an orientation along the electrified section. At the same time, the field strength with horizontal polarization is 4-8 dB higher than with vertical polarization. On alternating current sections, the level of radio interference significantly depends on meteorological conditions and is highest in dry weather. On direct current sections, the level of interference is mainly determined by the train position at the station and the conditions of current collection of the electric rolling stock. In station radio communication systems, the interference field strength at the location of the stationary antenna can be taken as equal to that measured under typical conditions. The interference field strength at the location of the locomotive antenna is 3-5 dB higher than that measured under typical conditions. Based on the required quality of signal reception under the influence of industrial radio interference, the minimum levels of useful signals for technological radio communication networks have been determined.
