PIANO CREATIVE WORKS OF VOLODYMYR IVASIUK: PERFORMING- AND PEDAGOGICAL ASPECT

PIANO CREATIVE WORKS OF VOLODYMYR IVASIUK: PERFORMING- AND PEDAGOGICAL ASPECT

Abstract

The article reveals the piano legacy of the famous Ukrainian composer of the second half of the 20th century Volodymyr Ivasyuk. The singer-songwriter also effectively worked in the chamber-instrumental genre, including such genres as a suite, variations for string quartets, a miniature, etc. His works in these genres are less known to Ukrainians. During the period between 1972 and 1979, V. Ivasyuk studied at the composition faculty of the Lviv State Conservatory (now the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy). Instrumental works (including piano works) appeared as assignments in the composition class. Composing instrumental music enriched V. Ivasyuk’s arsenal of expressive means, and also revealed new features of his musical language. The article highlights chamber-instrumental works, traces their premiere performances, namely Suites-variations for string orchestra, Improvisations-scherzando for cello and piano, Melodies for string orchestra. An attempt was made to do the musical-aesthetic and performing analyses of five piano works: Variations on the theme of the Ukrainian folk song “Sukhaiaverbo”, Autumn Picture, Piece No. 3k, Marcialemarcatissimo, and Little Toccata, which became a solid pedagogical and concert repertoire for young and mature Ukrainian performers. Piano compositions are full of colorful saturation of the Carpathian folklore at the same time with modern means of musical expressiveness and inherent individual stylistic features. The manifestation of tonal variety, rhythmic variation, transparency of exposition, play of light and shade, sophistication of harmony and dissonant layers, various technical techniques, which are present alongside the clear national determination of the works, is also revealed.
