Integrated Implementation of CLIL and TBLT in the Training of Military Professionals: International Experience and Prospects for National Military Education

Integrated Implementation of CLIL and TBLT in the Training of Military Professionals: International Experience and Prospects for National Military Education

Abstract

Introduction. In the context of Ukraine's integration into NATO and increasing participation of Ukrainian officers in international operations and training missions, higher military education institutions (HMEI) face a growing need to develop foreign language competence relevant to professional interaction in multinational settings. Traditional language training approaches used in Ukrainian HMEIs, based mainly on grammar-translation and isolated practice, fail to provide cadets with the necessary communicative and intercultural skills required for modern operational environments. The purpose of this article is to analyse international experience in implementing CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) in military education and to determine possibilities for their adaptation within Ukraine’s security and defence education sector. Methods. The research is based on a comparative analysis of international publications and institutional practices (2018–2025), systematization of CLIL/TBLT implementation models, and synthesis of methodological guidelines from NATO and partner countries. The results include identification of key factors for effective implementation of CLIL/TBLT, such as team teaching, scenario-based learning, dual assessment aligned with STANAG 6001, and development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC). The article presents typical training scenarios, tools for formative and summative assessment, and approaches to faculty development based on NATO DEEP, CLIL-HET, and TAEC programmes. The scientific novelty lies in the generalization of structured international practices in military education and the formulation of practical recommendations for integrating CLIL/TBLT into the Ukrainian military academic context. The findings are applicable to both cadet training and continuing education of instructors. Conclusion: the integration of CLIL and TBLT, supported by structured assessment and instructor training, may significantly enhance the effectiveness of language training and intercultural readiness of future officers. Further research should focus on piloting modular CLIL/TBLT units, developing assessment rubrics, creating a national framework for EMI instructor preparation, and studying the development of ICC under integrated teaching conditions.
