Poverty in Ukraine has become significant in scale and pace of development, which is a serious political and socio-economic problem. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly define a strategy for poverty eradication and to minimize the rate of its escalation and development the article analyzes social work with low-income groups of the population as a way of overcoming poverty, discloses the concept of "social protection", which is a system of state guarantee of the rights of Ukrainian citizens to provide them with material support in the event of full, partial or temporary disability, loss of breadwinner, unemployment from independent from them circumstances, as well as in old age and in other cases stipulated by the legislation of Ukraine. The system of social protection, which has three components: social assistance, social insurance, social justice, is analyzed. The ways of improving the system of social protection in Ukraine are highlighted. The main directions of the state's activities in the field of social security are characterized, namely: the reform of the social insurance system; pension reform; reform of social assistance system; improvement of the system of social protection of invalids, veterans of war and labor; social protection of citizens who suffered as a result of man-made and ecological disasters; improvement of the health care system.

Бідність в Україні набула значних масштабів та темпів розвитку, що є серйозною політичною та соціально-економічною проблемою, тому необхідно чітко визначити стратегію подолання бідності та мінімізувати темпи її ескалації та розвитку. У статті здійснено аналіз соціальної роботи з малозабезпеченими верствами населення як способу подолання бідності, розкрито поняття «соціальний захист», який є системою державного гарантування прав громадян України на матеріальне забезпечення їх у разі повної, часткової або тимчасової втрати працездатності, втрати годувальника, безробіття з незалежних від них обставин, а також у старості та в інших випадках, передбачених законодавством України. Охарактеризовано основні напрями діяльності держави у сфері соціального забезпечення. Проаналізовано систему соціального захисту, яка містить три складові, а саме: соціальна допомога, соціальне страхування, соціальна справедливість. Висвітлено шляхи вдосконалення системи соціального захисту в Україні.
