The main objective of the study is to analyse theoretical ideas of the members of the Cyril-Methodian Society, a secret Ukrainian organisation, regarding international relations and a place of the Ukrainian people in them, which were reflected in the programme document – “Book of Being of the Ukrainian People”. The famous historian Mykola Kostomarov is considered to be the author of this work. The formation of his ideas was influenced by the general international situation, which was accompanied by the formation of national states in Europe. At the same time, they were also influenced by the confrontation of Pan-Slavism and Pan-Germanism ideologies. Recorded in the “Book of Being of the Ukrainian People”, the views were not abstract, but were based on certain historical material. In general, the main purpose in the international context was proclaimed there to be the creation of a single Slavic federation (“Slavic State”), based on democratic principles. Moreover, traditionally for liberal views of the New Age, war was also condemned in international relations. It was declared as a result of the devil’s deeds according to the philosophical and religious vision. In such international relations, Ukraine was considered to be a central subject and object. It was viewed both as a state and people as one single whole. The research methodology grounds on the principles of historicism, objectivity and systematicity, using analysis, logic and comparative method. Their application made it possible to clarify factors that influenced the formation of the Cyril-Methodian Society and to analyse its main programme document. The conclusions of the study indicate that the views of the Cyril-Methodian Society members causing international relations, reflected in the “Book of Being of the Ukrainian People”, were purely liberal in nature with an idealism predominance. They arose on the basis of the struggle of Pan-Slavism and Pan-Germanism ideas.

Метою дослідження є аналіз теоретичних уявлень членів Кирило-Мефодіївського товариства, таємної української організації, щодо міжнародних відносин і місця в них українського народу, котрі були відображені у програмному документі – «Книзі буття українського народу». Автором цього твору вважається відомий історик Микола Костомаров. На формування його ідей вплинула загальна міжнародна ситуація, яка супроводжувалася формуванням національних держав у Європі. Водночас на них впливало і протистояння ідеологій панславізму та пангерманізму. Погляди, зафіксовані у «Книзі буття», були не абстрактними, а спиралися на історичний матеріал. У цілому ж головною метою у міжнародному контексті там проголошувалося створення єдиної слов’янської федерації («Слов’янщини»), заснованої на демократичних началах. При цьому традиційно для ліберальних поглядів Нового часу також засуджувалася війна у міжнародних відносинах, яка оголошувалася результатом діяльності диявола відповідно до філософсько-релігійного бачення. Центральним суб’єктом і об’єктом у таких міжнародних відносинах вважалася Україна, під якою розумілися як держава, так і народ як одне єдине ціле. Методологія дослідження заснована на принципах історизму, об’єктивності та системності, із використанням аналізу, логіки і порівняльного методу. Їх застосування дозволило з’ясувати фактори, які вплинули на формування ідеології Кирило-Мефодіївського товариства, та проаналізувати його основний програмний документ. Висновки дослідження засвідчують, що погляди членів Кирило-Мефодіївського товариства на міжнародні відносини, відображені у «Книзі буття українського народу», мали суто ліберальний характер, причому з переважанням ідеалізму. Виникли вони на основі боротьби ідей панславізму та пангерманізму.
